AURORA, Ill. – The No. 14 Loras College men's volleyball team took down the No. 3 California Lutheran University Kingsmen in straight sets on Sunday morning inside Thornton Gymnasium.
The Kingsmen held an early 5-3 lead over the Duhawks, but the Purple and Gold responded by rattling off six consecutive points to put themselves in front 9-5. Loras (4-0) led by as many as 12 (23-11) during the set and ultimately took set one by a score of 25-15.
The Duhawks came out strong in set two scoring the first three points of the set, but Cal Lutheran (8-2) cut the deficit and tied things up at 7-7 before taking a brief one-point lead. Both squads traded three-point runs before Loras scored four straight points to regain the lead (17-14) which would hold until the end of the set.
In set three, Cal Lutheran took a 6-2 lead over the Duhawks, but Loras followed up with nine points in a row to take a five-point lead (11-6). The Kingsmen were able to get within two points (16-14), but the Purple and Gold answered with a three-point run to extend the lead back to five. The Duhawks completed the sweep with a 25-19 win in set three.
As a team, Cal Lutheran hit .081, finishing with 33 kills and 25 errors in 99 attempts. Vince Semon and Michael Stahl led the Kingsmen on offense with seven kills apiece, while Taylor Marks dished out 28 assists in the loss.
Corey Mayotte paced the Duhawk offense with 14 kills. He added three service aces, three blocks and four digs to his stat line as well.
Dorian Fiorenza also tallied double-digit kills with 11, while
Joe Horn totaled 30 assists. As a team, Loras hit .313, which featured 35 kills and nine errors in 83 attempts.
