DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College men's basketball team put itself back in the win column with a decisive 87-72 victory over Blackburn College on Monday afternoon.
A pair of free throws from
Jack Haynes just 24 seconds into the contest gave the Duhawks a 2-0 lead that they would only extend from that point on until the final buzzer.
Loras (6-2, 2-0 A-R-C) held a 22-point (51-29) advantage over the Beavers at the midway point.
The largest lead of the game for the Purple and Gold was 27 points and it came with over 18 minutes left to play. The Duhawks always kept Blackburn (0-9, 0-3 SLIAC) at a comfortable distance not letting the Beavers any closer than 15 points.
Tyler Bass led the way for the Duhawks with 21 points, four rebounds and three steals. Haynes registered his fourth double-double of the season so far with 16 points and 10 boards, while
Kyle Kober added in 14 points.
Gavin Sarvis rounded out the double-digit scorers with 10 points. As a team, Loras shot 53.8 percent (35-of-65) from the floor and 72.7 percent (16-of-22) from the foul line.
Caleb Shaab paced the Blackburn offense with 20 points. Nick Cook and Odis Grissom contributed 13 points apiece, while Darius Duff chipped in 12 points and dished out six assists in the loss. The Beavers shot 54.2 percent (26-of-48) from the field and 73.3 percent (11-of-15) from the free throw line.
