Duhawks Ready for First Round Matchup with BVU in A-R-C Tournament

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The postseason has made its way upon the Loras College as the American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Men's Basketball Tournament is set to begin Tuesday night. The No. 3-seeded Duhawks are set to host the No. 6-seeded Buena Vista University Beavers at 6 p.m. inside of the Lillis Athletic & Wellness Center.

The winner of the first round match up will take on the No. 2 seed Coe College in the semifinals on Thursday, Feb. 22nd. Tip is set for 7 p.m. inside of Kohawk Arena. The eventual winner of the A-R-C Tournament will receive the league's automatic qualifier into the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Loras is coming off of a 74-66 loss to crosstown rival, the University of Dubuque, in the two teams' regular season finales on Saturday afternoon inside the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.

Loras shot just 35.7 percent (20-of-56) from the floor and 28.6 percent (8-of-28) from behind the arc en route to their fifth loss of the season.

Jared Pearson led the way for the Duhawks with 17 points. The Des Plaines, Ill. native shot 5-of-8 from the field and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe in 24 minutes of action. Ali Sabet added in 13 points and four rebounds, while Myles Barry and Tyler Bass chipped in 11 points apiece. Bass also added a team-high seven rebounds and three assists to his stat line as well.

Dubuque shot 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the field and 27.3 percent (6-of-22) from behind the arc. Sam Kilburg led all scorers with 23 points, while Jaylin McCants contributed 16 points.
 
ABOUT THE DUHAWKS
The Purple and Gold are searching for their first A-R-C Tournament championship since 2008. Loras averages 85.9 points per game, a number that sits atop the conference. Limiting its opponents to 72.2 points per game, the Duhawks' scoring margin difference of 13.7 is the 16th-best mark in all of Division III.

Sabet averages the second-most points per game in the A-R-C at 19.3, followed by Bass at 12.1. Jackson Molstead and Jack Haynes round out double-digit scorers for the Duhawks at 12 and 11.4 points, respectively. Sabet drains 3.32 three point shots per game, the fourth-highest mark in the nation.

Bass averages 7.2 rebounds per game, placing the junior out of Washington, Ill. fifth in the A-R-C. Haynes holds the highest field goal percentage mark in the conference at 65.9 percent, while Sabet knocks down an A-R-C-high 93.2 percent of his free throw attempts.
 
SCOUTING THE BEAVERS
Buena Vista is seeking the program's eighth A-R-C Tourney title, with the last coming in 2012. The Beavers average 82.2 points per game, while holding their opponents to 76.8. The team takes and makes the second-most three pointers per game at 27.6 attempts to nine makes.

Senior guard Zane Neubaum averages a team-high 19 points per game, followed by senior forward Gunner Reed. Carter Sievers is the last Beaver to average double-digits, as the freshman guard scores 12.

Reed averages 7.6 rebounds per game, a mark that stands as the fourth-most in the conference. At 59.2 percent, Reed is second in the conference in field goal percentage, while Sievers' 85.4 percent mark from the charity stipe ranks fourth.

THE SERIES
The Beavers own the series record at a mark of 24-22, but Loras is in the midst of an eight-game win streak over BVU, dating back to Feb. 5, 2020. This season, Loras posted a 2-0 record over Buena Vista and most recently downed the Beavers 99-77 on Feb. 7.
