WINONA, Minn. – The Loras College men's tennis team began the spring portion of its schedule by splitting a pair of matches at the Winona Tennis Center this past Friday and Saturday.
The Purple and Gold grabbed their first win of the 2023-24 season against the Saint Mary's University of Minnesota by a score of 6-3, before falling 2-7 to the University of Northwestern (Minn.).

In doubles play,
Gage Becker and
Thomas Kampmier fell 1-8 to Evan Huemoeller and Brendon Raabolle in the No. 1 spot, while
Lucas Healy and
Kareem Kassas secured an 8-6 victory over Caden Rodning and Matt Besek at No. 2.
Henry Condo and
Samuel Cañas Guerrero put the Duhawks ahead 2-1 heading into singles play with an 8-4 win over Philip Apel and Tucker Stene at No. 3 doubles.
Becker came out on top at No.1 singles, taking down Huemoeller 1-6, 7-5 and 10-7 in the tiebreaker. Kassas defeated Raabolle 6-3, 6-3 at No.2 singles, while
Sean Gelski dropped his match 4-6, 2-6 in the No. 3 spot. Kampmier handled Rodning at No. 4 singles by scores of 7-5, 4-6 and 10-6 in the tiebreaker, while Healy followed suit with a 6-3 and 6-1 win over Apel in the No. 5 spot. Cañas Guerrero started off slow at No. 6 singles, falling 0-6 in the first game, however he fought back to win the second game 7-5 to force a tiebreaker where he ultimately fell 7-10.
Northwestern 7, Loras 2
Against the Eagles, Becker and Kampmier contended at No. 1 doubles, but were unable to defeat Stew Morrell and Jacob Weddle falling 4-8. Carson Haack and Griffen Jarchow handed Kassas and Healy an 8-3 loss at No. 2 doubles, while Cañas Guerrero and Gelski met a similar fate in the No. 3 spot, falling 1-8 to Darin Rupp and Ben Schutz.
Cañas Guerrero and
Andrew Day scored the only two points of the match for the Duhawks with their performances in singles play. Cañas Guerrero outlasted Jarchow at No. 4 singles, taking the match by scores of 6-2, 4-6. Day soundly defeated Caleb Jergenson 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 6 spot to secure the final Loras point.
Up Next: The Duhawks travel to Madison, Wis. on Saturday, Feb. 10 to take on Cornell College and Edgewood College at the Powless Tennis Center.
