Men's Volleyball Handles Dominican

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College men's volleyball team earned its second consecutive win over the Dominican University Stars in straight sets on Saturday afternoon inside the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.

After some back-and-forth play in the beginning of set one, the Duhawks used a 3-0 run to tie and then regain the lead for the final time (11-9). Loras (6-0) outscored the Stars 14-7 in the remainder of the set to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

Dominican (3-4) raced out to a 4-0 lead to start set two, but the Purple and Gold cut into the lead and stayed neck and neck with the Stars throughout the entirety of the set. The Duhawks broke the final tie of the set (19-19) with a Corey Mayotte kill. Loras took set two by a score of 25-22.

The Duhawks never trailed in set three, leading by as many as six (19-13) in the middle of the set. Anytime Loras went ahead, the Stars responded by either tying things up or cutting the lead to just one. Loras completed the sweep with a 25-21 victory in set three.

Dominican was led by Casey Goss who finished with nine kills and five digs. Jarod Hesse followed closely behind with eight kills, while Owen Morrow dished out 25 assists in the loss. As a team, the Stars hit .244, which featured 30 kills and 10 errors in 82 attempts.

Mayotte led the Purple and Gold offense by putting down 18 kills and hitting .652 percent. Dorian Fiorenza and Tyler Kratochvil also totaled double digit kills, finishing with 13 and 10 respectively. Fiorenza added a team-high eight digs and two blocks to his stat line as well, while Joe Horn tallied 38 assists and two service aces in the win. The Duhawks hit .456 as a team, which included 50 kills and 14 errors in 79 attempts.

Up Next: The Duhawks welcome Simpson College and Benedictine University to Lillis Court for a triangular on Saturday, Feb.10 with game times scheduled for 12:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. respectively.
