DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College men's volleyball team defeated Augustana College in straight sets on Wednesday evening inside the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.
Loras (18-0 overall, 5-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) allowed the Vikings to jump out to a 4-0 lead early in the first set, due to three consecutive attack errors by the Duhawks. The Purple and Gold used a 6-0 run to regain the lead (11-7) and would not let Augustana (15-3, 2-2) cut the lead to any less than two. The Duhawks took set the opening set 25-20.
The Vikings rattled off four consecutive points to take a 6-4 lead early on in set two, but Loras responded with a 7-0 run to hold a 11-6 lead midway through the set. The Duhawks weathered the visitors' runs that put them within two multiple times to take the set 25-20.
Neither team was able to keep a lead larger than four points throughout the final set, which led to eight ties. The Duhawks broke the final tie at 19-19 with a 6-3 run to complete the sweep with a 25-22 set three win.
Aidan Bolen led the way for the Viking with nine kills, while Ty Heater followed closely behind with seven kills. Colin Schaefer totaled 26 assists, while Max Sellers finished with a game-high 10 digs. As a team, Augustana hit .172, which featured 31 kills and 16 errors in 87 attempts.
Corey Mayotte and
Dorian Fiorenza led the Loras offense with 14 and 11 kills respectively.
Joe Horn dished out 33 assists and recorded two service aces, while
Tyler Kratochvil and
Roman Rothermel tallied two blocks apiece. As a team, the Duhawks hit .258,finishing with 39 kills and 15 errors in 93 attempts.
