Story Links

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College men's volleyball team earned its 19th victory of the season with a three-set win over Illinois Wesleyan University on Wednesday night inside the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.

After some back-and-forth play in the beginning of the first set, the Duhawks benefited from a couple of Titan attack errors and a kill by Tyler Kratochvil, which allowed them to break the final tie at 11-11 and take a 14-11 lead. Loras (19-0 overall, 6-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) closed out the set on an 11-4 run to hold a 1-0 lead in the match heading into set two.

Illinois Wesleyan (10-11, 1-5) stayed close by throughout the entire second set, never letting the Duhawks increase their lead to more than four points. The Titans cut the deficit to just two late in the set (24-22), but the Purple and Gold ultimately came out on top, 25-22, following a service error by the visitors.

In the final set, the Duhawks utilized a four-point run early on to erase the two-point Titan lead and regain control, which they would maintain for the remainder of the set. Loras led by as many as 11 throughout the set and completed the sweep with a 25-16 set three win.

Illinois Wesleyan was led by Michael Eastman who finished with nine kills. Bryce Williams followed closely behind with eight kills, while Vince DiCosola handed out 15 assists. As a team, the Titans hit .143, which featured 30 kills and 19 errors in 77 attempts.

Corey Mayotte led the Loras offense with 16 kills, while Dorian Fiorenza totaled double-digit kills as well, finishing with 12 on the night. Joe Horn dished out 36 assists, while Sean Wenzel tallied two blocks. As a team, the Duhawks hit .548, finishing with 40 kills and six errors in 62 attempts.

Up Next: The Duhawks continue conference play against the North Park University Vikings on Saturday, March 23. The Purple and Gold will be honoring the senior members of their squad prior to the first serve on Lillis Court at 3:00 p.m.
