DUBUQUE, Iowa - A brilliant header from junior forward
Dani Galiana Torres was all the offense the Loras College men's soccer team would need in its Sunday night 1-0 home opener victory over Dominican University.
Loras (2-0-0) took advantage of a corner kick chance in the 20
th minute where senior midfielder
Owen Ivanuck sent in a beauty from the corner toward the box, setting up Galiana Torres for a header that beat the Stars' keeper to the near post.
Galiana Torres' goal put the Duhawks on the board, even though Dominican (0-2-0) had more scoring opportunities overall. The Purple and Gold held onto the lead for the remainder of the match and played solid defense in front of both goalkeepers
Ben Krogman and Nathaniel Gerling.
The Duhawks managed to hold onto the victory despite constant pressure from the Stars. Dominican fired off 17 shots in total, nine of which were on goal, but was unsuccessful in finding the back of the net. The Purple and Gold earned 10 corner kick opportunities compared to just seven corner kick chances for the visitors.
Up Next: The Duhawks travel across the river this weekend to Wheaton College to play in the Bob Baptista Invitational. They are set to take on the host on Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m., before facing off against North Carolina Wesleyan University on Saturday, Sept. 7 at 4:30 p.m.
