Women's Tennis Falls in Doubleheader

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College women's tennis team fell in a home doubleheader on Saturday to American Rivers Conference foe, Wartburg College, and non-conference opponent University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
 
Wartburg 6, Loras 1
The Duhawks opened with a strong fight in doubles with close matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, but were unable take those matches falling 4-6 and 6-7 respectively. With the Knights taking the doubles point, the Duhawks headed into singles down 1-0.

The sole victory for the Purple and Gold came from sophomore Mary Breitbach at the No. 1 singles spot, as she defeated Natalie Kaiser 6-1, 6-2. Extremely close matches were fought at the No. 2 and No. 3 spot by seniors Dorothy Deans and Caroline Hutchinson. Deans ultimately fell in a three-set thriller against the Knights' Reese Williams 3-6, 7-5, 6-7(4), while Hutchinson met a similar fate against Emma Thurness falling in a super tiebreaker 6-0, 6-7(3), 9-11.

The Duhawks lost the doubles point to the Titans in closely fought matches, and headed into singles play down 1-0.

Sophomore Lauren Keiper handily beat her opponent at the No. 6 spot, defeating Grace Brown 6-1, 6-0. The last victory of the day for the Purple and Gold came at the No. 4 spot, when Leia Papanicholas defeated Brianna Owens 3-6, 6-4, 10-3.
 
UP NEXT: Loras will face off in another conference match against crosstown rivals, the University of Dubuque, on Tuesday, September 17. Matches are set to begin at 4 p.m. at the Frank Farber Tennis Courts.
