SAINT PETER, Minn. - The Loras College women's tennis team competed in the ITA Regional Championships and the Midwest Invite, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College this past weekend.
Mary Breitbach and
Dorothy Deans came up short on Friday in their opening singles matches at the ITA Regional Singles Championships. Deans fell to Miriam Shetyman of Carroll University 6-4 and 7-5, while Breitbach fell to Jenna Mahoney of Central College 3-6, 7-6 (4), and 11-9. In doubles play, the duo fell to Coe College 8-7 (6).
Leia Papanicholas and
Caroline Hutchinson opened their doubles play with a win over Emma Farder and Ava Hacker of Concordia-Moorehead by a score of 8-1. They would fall in their next match against Kelsey Dorr and Caitlyn Stadter of St. Catherine University, 8-2.
At the Midwest Invite Singles in draw two,
Ellie Kalina would take a loss from UW- Superior's Guila De Barros 6-1 and 6-4, while Papanicholas would fall to Paula Sendele of St. Scholastica 6-4 and 6-2. In draw six, Elle Nyugen would come up short to St. Scholastica's, Elena Bartels, 6-2 and 6-1.
In draw seven singles,
Alexis Tatum would secure a win over St. Olaf's Lidia Bach by scores of 6-0, 5-7 and 10-3.
Hutchinson defeated Madelyn Connaughty from Edgewood College in draw eight singles, 6-4 and 7-6(3). She would then face Abby Schwartz from Concordia Wisconsin where she defeated her by scores of 6-2 and 6-3. This would be the end of Hutchinson's run as she would lose in the semifinal to Nina Perkins from
Grinnell College by scores of 6-2 and 6-1.
The last wins of the day for the Duhawks came by way of consolation doubles. Kalina and Tatum defeated Hannah Hyttsen and Yerly Rothwell from Northwestern (St. Paul) by a score of 8-2. Deans and Breitbach followed suit in their match as they defeated Skylar Robinson and Emily Eisma from Bethel by a score of 8-1.
Up Next: The Duhawks travel to Decorah, Iowa on Tuesday, Sept. 24 for an A-R-C matchup with Luther College. The first serve is set for 4 p.m.
