Women's Volleyball Falls to Cornell in Five-Setter

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The Loras College women's volleyball team fell, 3-2, in a five-set thriller against Cornell College on Wednesday night inside the Small Athletic and Wellness Center.

In the opening set, neither squad led by more than two points, until the Duhawks broke the final tie with a 4-0 run that featured a pair of Cornell (5-10) errors and one kill from both Iva Senio and Autumn Finch. Loras (8-7) maintained the lead from that point on, extending its advantage even further with four consecutive points to close out and win the set by a score of 25-19.

The Purple and Gold held a brief lead (17-16) in set two, but the Rams responded with a 9-2 run to take the set, 25-19 and knot the match up at 1-1.

Loras raced out to a 7-2 lead in the third set but had to battle throughout the remainder of it as both teams fought for every point. The set featured 10 ties, but a Kyra Kuehn kill broke the final one, giving the Duhawks the lead once again that they would hold onto to take the set 25-23.

The Rams came out on top in set four by a score of 25-20 to force a fifth set. Cornell never trailed in the final set, leading by as many as eight, before securing the 15-7 set win to take the match.

Sophie Younkin and Finch put down 15 and 14 kills respectively to pace the Duhawk offense. Sara Hoskins handed out 49 assists, while Lucie Lambe totaled 22 digs on the night. As a team, Loras hit .164, finishing with 57 kills and 29 errors in 171 attempts.

Up Next: The Duhawks head to Madison, Wis. on Saturday, Sept. 28 to face off against Edgewood College (12 pm) and the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse (2 pm) in a triangular match.
