Men's Basketball Comes Up Short Against Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College men's basketball team fell to crosstown rival, the University of Dubuque, 100-79 on Wednesday night inside the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.

The first half featured six ties and 10 leads changes as neither squad was able to put themselves in front by more than five points for the first 17 minutes of play. Dubuque (13-4, 7-1 A-R-C) held the largest lead of the opening half (11) with 1:53 remaining, however the Duhawks used a pair of baskets from Alex Singleton and two free throws from Jared Pearson to cut the deficit to seven (45-38) at the midway point.

Loras (12-5, 6-2) put itself within four (52-48) with 16:28 left in the contest, but that was the closest it got for the rest of the game. The Spartans extended their lead to as many as 24 (96-72) with just under four and a half minutes to play to take game one of the crosstown rivalry with ease.

Pearson led the way for the Purple and Gold with 20 points and two steals. Singleton added in 15 points, while Gavin Sarvis followed closely behind with 14 points. Tyler Bass rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Duhawks with 11 points and a team-high five rebounds. Loras shot 51 percent (26-of-51) from the floor and 40 percent (6-of-15) from three.

Jaylin McCants led all scorers with 31 points, while also adding seven rebounds, four steals and six assists to his stat line. Jacob Williams and Jalen Scott chipped in 16 and 13 points respectively, while Sunday John finished with 11 points on the night. The Spartans shot 55.9 percent (33-of-59) from the field and 78.1 percent (25-of-32) from the foul line.

Up Next: The Duhawks travel to Cedar Rapids, Iowa to take on the Coe College Kohawks on Wednesday, Jan. 29. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. from Kohawk Arena.
