NEENAH, Wis. — The Loras College women's tennis team opened its spring season with a doubleheader against the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and Carroll University.
Loras 3, UW-Stevens Point 4
In doubles play, Mary Breitbach and Dorothy Deans secured a 6-2 victory over Tristin Jantz and Jordan Scharf at the No. 1 spot. Leia Papanicholas and Ellie Kalina fell short to Brooklyn Steier and Allie Brosteau, 6-4, at No. 2 doubles. In the No. 3 position, Caroline Hutchinson and Alexis Tatum were defeated by Maya Kunze and Abigail Ashley, 6-4.
Hutchinson and Tatum earned the only two singles wins for the Duhawks. At No. 4 singles, Hutchinson defeated Kunze by scores of 6-1, 7-6 (7-4). Tatum, in the No. 6 spot, won a hard-fought match against Morgan Milan, 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10-5). Deans battled in the No. 2 spot but lost a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2. Breitbach, Papanicholas, and Kalina came up short in their respective matches at No. 1, 3, and 5 singles.
Loras 4, Carroll 3
After an earlier loss, the Duhawks rebounded with a victory over the Pioneers. Breitbach and Deans secured the only doubles win for Loras, defeating Katherine Trifilio and Natasa Pupovac, 6-4. The No. 2 and No. 3 doubles teams fell by scores of 6-3 and 7-6 (7-4).
Loras claimed four singles victories courtesy of Papanicholas, Hutchinson, Kalina, and Tatum. At No. 3 singles, Papanicholas won in a tiebreaker, 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6). Hutchinson and Tatum followed suit with wins of 6-3, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7) and 6-2, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6), respectively. Kalina delivered a dominant performance at No. 5 singles, defeating Erin Horzewski, 6-2, 6-1, to help secure the team victory.
Up Next: Loras travels to Illinois to face Lake Forest College and North Park University on Saturday, March 1. The Duhawks take on the Foresters at 12:30 p.m. and Vikings at 5:00 p.m.
