DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College men's volleyball team secured a decisive 3-0 victory over Edgewood College on Tuesday night in its home opener.
The Duhawks came out strong, rattling off six straight points to begin the opening set. Loras (5-1, 0-0 CCIW) led by as many as 10 multiple times throughout the set to earn the 25-18 set one win with ease.
The Purple and Gold never trailed in the second set, extending their lead to eight (15-7) midway through the set. Edgewood (1-5, 0-0 NACC) cut the deficit to just two (19-17) following a 5-0 run, but the Duhawks benefited from a service error and a
Connor Jaral kill to push the lead back up to four (21-17). Loras closed out set two on a 4-0 run to take the set 25-18 once again.
Similarly to the first set, the Duhawks began the third set with a 6-0 advantage. The Duhawks led by at least four for the entirety of the set and completed the sweep with a 25-16 set three win.
Corey Mayotte led the Duhawk offense, finishing with 16 kills and a .483 hitting percentage. Mayotte added a pair of service aces and eight digs to his stat line as well.
Bo Brainerd III followed closely behind hitting .714 and putting down 10 kills on the night, while
Evan Dziadkowiec handed out 36 assists. As a team, Loras hit .415, which featured 43 kills and nine errors in 82 attempts.
Gavin Patterson, Owen Hartjes and Carsyn Stringfellow led a balanced attack for the Eagles finishing with six kills apiece. Will Gehrke dished out 27 assists, while Jack Mullane totaled seven digs. Edgewood hit .161 as a team, which included 31 kills and 17 errors in 87 attempts.
Up Next: The Purple and Gold travel to Fond du Lac, Wis. on Feb. 13 to take on the Marian University Sabres. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Sadoff Gymnasium.
