Women's Tennis Drops Final Pair of Matches in Florida

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Loras College women's tennis team concluded its spring break trip with losses to Ursinus College and Piedmont University.

Loras 1, Ursinus 6

Mary Breitbach and Dorothy Deans secured the Duhawks' lone victory in doubles play, defeating Katie Yu and Morgan Coupe 6-2. In the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches, Ellie Kalina and Leia Papanicholas fell 1-6 to Allie Armour and Bella Vassalluzzo, while Alexis Tatum and Caroline Hutchinson dropped a close match to Caroline Daly and Fiona Finnerty 6-7 (4-7). Loras entered singles play trailing 1-0.

Hutchinson earned the Duhawks' only singles victory at No. 4, defeating Coupe 6-1, 6-1. Breitbach battled at No. 1, winning the second set 6-1 after dropping the first 3-6, but ultimately fell in the tiebreaker 6-10. Deans lost both sets 4-6 to Daly, while Papanicholas was bested by Yu 3-6, 4-6. Kalina fought at No. 5 but lost in a tiebreaker 6-4, 3-6, 7-10. Tatum fell to Vassalluzzo 2-6, 3-6 at No. 6.

Loras 1, Piedmont 6

Breitbach and Deans secured a 6-2 win over Bri Laidman and Alyssa McSpadden at No. 1 doubles, while Papanicholas and Kalina followed with a 6-4 victory against Sarah Row and Jordan Ballard. The two doubles wins gave Loras a 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

However, Piedmont swept all six singles matches. Papanicholas fell 0-6 at No. 3, while Deans dropped her match 2-6, 3-6 to Laidman at No. 2. Hutchinson lost 2-6, 1-6, and both Tatum and Kalina fell 2-6 in their respective matches. Breitbach battled at No. 1 but came up short against McSpadden, falling 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6).

Up Next: The Duhawks return to action on Saturday, March 22, traveling to Mount Vernon, Iowa, to face Cornell College at 9 a.m., followed by a match against the University of Northwestern at 12:45 p.m.
