DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College men's volleyball team took down the Augustana College Vikings in three sets on Wednesday night on Duhawk Day inside the Lillis Athletic and Wellness Center.
Both squads started off by trading errors in the first set, before they found their footing. Loras (13-3, 4-1 CCIW) led by as many as 10 (17-7) halfway through the set. A pair of back-to-back kills from
Corey Mayotte and
Bo Brainerd III propelled the Duhawks to a set one win, by a score of 25-11.
Entering the second set, Augustana (11-10, 1-6) opened the scoring and maintained a four-point lead (9-5). However, the Purple and Gold mounted a comeback halfway through the set and didn't look back. Loras went on to win the set, 25-17.
The third set saw the Duhawks controlling the pace of play (6-2). After a few errors, the Vikings rallied to stay within one (17-16). A kill by Ryan Huntington switched the script, as the Blue and Yellow took their first lead of the set (22-21). The Duhawks reclaimed the lead permanently behind four kills from Mayotte, allowing the Duhawks to complete the sweep with a 26-24 set three win.
Mayotte led the way for the Duhawks with a match-high 26 kills.
Nolan Krygsheld and Brainerd were just behind Mayotte, finishing with 11 and eight kills respectively.
Aidan Peloquin and Krygsheld tallied six digs.
Evan Dziadkowiec dished out 39 assists, while the Duhawks hit .465 as a team, registering 49 kills and nine errors in 86 attempts.
Zach Moreano put down a team-high 10 kills for the Vikings, while also recording six digs on the night. Max Sellers finished with six digs as well, while Colin Schaefer handed out 21 assists. The Vikings hit .169, which included 27 kills and 15 errors in 71 attempts.
Up Next: The Duhawks will travel to Kenosha, Wis. to take on the fourth-ranked Carthage College Firebirds on Saturday, March 22. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. from Tarble Arena.
