Men’s Tennis Storms Past University of Northwestern-St. Paul with Singles Sweep

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – On Friday, what began as a shaky start in doubles turned into a statement win as the Loras men's tennis team battled back in singles to overwhelm University of Northwestern-St. Paul 6-1.

The Duhawks started the contest a bit slower, with challenging losses in doubles action. Sean Sonoiki and Samuel Canas Guerrero tallied the lone doubles win at the No. 3 spot, defeating Caleb Jergenson and Caleb Swigart 6-2. UNW edged out the Duhawk pairs, winning at the No. 1 spot 6-3, and at the No. 2 spot 6-4, ultimately earning them the doubles point. The Purple and Gold entered singles play down 0-1 but made sure that was the last tally in the win column for the Eagles.

Gage Becker kicked off the Duhawks' singles dominance at the No. 2 spot, defeating Griffen Jarchow 6-1, 6-3. Diego Mejias followed at the No. 1 spot in a nail-biter match, taking down Carson Haack 3-6, 6-4, 1-0(8). Canas Guerrero had his own neck-and-neck battle, coming out on top against the Eagles' Sam Majerus 6-4, 5-7, 1-0(9) at the No. 3 spot. Lucas Healy cruised to victory at the No. 5 spot, winning 6-0, 6-1. At the No. 4 spot, Sonoiki prevailed in the final tiebreaker of the day, outlasting Issac Thomforde 3-6, 6-2, 1-0(8). Finally, Henry Condo completed the singles sweep at the No. 6 spot winning against Swigart 6-1, 7-5.
