Softball Splits Weekend Doubleheader with NWU

LINCOLN, Neb. – In a tail of two different games, the Loras College Duhawks and Nebraska Wesleyan Prairie Wolves split their weekend doubleheader Saturday at NWU Field.

Game One: Loras 6, Nebraska Wesleyan 5

Loras (18-11 Overall, 5-4 A-R-C) wasted no time getting their offence going, putting a five spot on NWU in the first inning. Katherine Svigelj and Ava Franklin led off the game with base hits before back-to-back doubles from Kaili Henning and Kiya Steger gave Loras a 3-0 lead with zero outs in the frame. After Dana Skorich singled to advance Steger to third, Morgan Machovec laid down a SAC bunt to put runner on second and third for Clare Murphy. Murphy lined a base hit to left field to score Steger, which made way for an Emily Monahan SAC bunt to plate Bailey Welu.

Nebraska Wesleyan (20-8, 2-3) scored runs in the third and fourth innings thanks to RBIs from Lyndsey Roth and Addi Duranski to cut the Loras lead to four (6-2), after the Duhawks also got a run in the fourth.

Heading into the bottom of the seventh, NWU was able to plate three runs courtesy of a fielder's choice and back-to-back RBI doubles. With the winning run at the plate, Henning was able to end any comeback bids, getting Duranski to pop out to first base to end the game.

Henning earned her eighth win of the year. She threw all seven innings, giving up 11 hits, five runs, and struck out three.

Game Two: Loras 0, Nebraska Wesleyan 2

Unlike game one, the bats for both teams were quiet and only combined for eight hits for the game.

The Prairie Wolves (21-8, 3-3) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth after taking advantage of a Duhawk (18-12,5-5) error. NWU added an insurance run in the fifth from Paige Davison to give them a 2-0 lead going into the seventh, where Loras went down in order to end the game.

Up Next: Loras will travel to Indianola, Iowa to take on the Simpson College Storm on April 16. First pitch of the doubleheader is scheduled for 3 PM at the Simpson Softball Complex.
