WAVERLY, Iowa – The Loras College softball team lost the weekend series with the Wartburg College Knights on Saturday afternoon at Lynes Field. The Duhawks came up short in game one, 5-4, and dropped game two, 7-5.
Game One: Loras 4, Wartburg College 5
The Duhawks (15-10 overall, 2-3 A-R-C) scored the first four runs of the contest. In the second inning,
Morgan Machovec reached on a throwing error before scoring on another error by the Knights.
Whitney Leipold doubled to left to score
Emily Monahan from second. In the fourth, Monahan reached on a fielder's choice, which allowed Machovec score.
Wartburg (14-9, 3-0) rallied in the fifth frame by scoring all five of their runs. Alexis Larson singled up the middle and scored Bella Mulder, moving up all of the runners. The Knights added onto their lead when Addy Wells hit a sacrifice fly out to center, advancing Riley Feeley to third, and scoring Stephanie Kiefer. After an error was made at first base off the bat of Amanda Strzyzewski, Feeley scored and Larson moved to second. Sydney Fellows drove in the game winning runs with her double, scoring Strzyzewski and Larson.
Ava Franklin led the offense for the Purple and Gold, going 2-for-4 with two singles. In the circle,
Kaili Henning drew her fourth loss of the season. Henning threw six innings, allowing nine hits, two earned runs with five strikeouts and five walks.
Game Two: Loras 5, Wartburg College 7
Game two was a hit fest which featured 17 combined hits, eight for the Duhawks, and nine for the Knights.
Wartburg (15-9, 4-0) started off the game with an RBI groundout from Feeley that scored Fellows.
Loras (15-11, 2-4) tied the game in the second frame, with Machovec scoring after Monahan reached on an error. The Orange and Black did some damage during their side of the second, starting with a double from Ally Happ that scored Larson. Fellows singled to left field and brought Happ in for the third run. Two batters later, Carley Bredar singled, advancing the runners and scoring Fellows. The sixth run came in on a Mulder single towards third base, which scored Bredar.
Clare Murphy pulled out the rake in the fourth for the Purple and Gold, hitting a two-run home run to right field. In the bottom of the fourth, Feeley responded with a single up the middle that scored Fellows. The Duhawks added in two runs thanks to doubles from Monahan and Murphy. In the end, it wasn't enough to overtake the lead and the Knights took game two to secure the doubleheader sweep.
Up Next: Loras will come back home to take on the Coe College Kohawks on Tuesday, April 8. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 2 p.m., with game two scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
