May 2, 2025

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

STORM LAKE, Iowa – Behind an explosive offense in game one and dominate pitching in game two, the Loras College softball team swept the Buena Vista University Beavers on Friday afternoon.

Game One: Loras 11, Buena Vista University 2 F/5

Loras (21-14 Overall, 8-7 A-R-C) did most of their work early, scoring five runs in the first, followed by four in the second inning.

In the opening frame, Katherine Svigel led the game off with a base hit before stealing second and advancing to third on a ground out. After a Kaili Henning fly out, the Duhakws put together one of their best two-out rallies of the year. Kiya Steger started the rally with an RBI double to bring Svigel home. The following at-bat, Dana Skorich delivered an RBI base hit to score Steger, and advanced to second on a Beaver error. After Morgan Machovec walked, Clare Murphy put an end to the BVU starter's day with a base hit to load the bases. Emily Monahan welcomed the new Buena Vista pitcher to the game with a bases clearing triple to give Loras a 5-0 lead.

Buena Vista (7-26, 0-15) scored their only runs of the game in the bottom of the first thanks to back-to-back RBI doubles from Madalyn Elwood and Rylie Garner.

After giving up the two runs, the Loras offense went right back to work, and batted around for the second time in as many innings. Ava Franklin and Henning started the inning with back-to-back base hits before Franklin came around to score thanks to Skorich's second RBI of the game. Ashli Bossom came into the game as a pinch hitter and recorded an RBI fielder's choice the following at bat to plate Henning. Murphy continued to pass the bat down the lineup after her RBI single to score Steger before Monahan delivered her fourth RBI of the game, this time via a SAC fly to score Skorich.

After a scoreless third inning, the Duhawks added two insurance runs after a two RBI single from Franklin to score Whitney Leipold and Svigel.

After running into trouble in the first inning, Henning would allow only to hits the remainder of the game en route to her team high 10th win of the year. Henning went five innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out five.

Game Two: Loras 1, Buena Vista University 0

Unlike game one of the series, runs were hard to come by as Steger and Garner both battled in the circle.

The lone run of the game came off the bat of Monahan, who delivered her fifth RBI of the day, this time plating Machovec, who reached on a base hit.

Steger put on a clinic in the circle for Loras. The freshman from Dyersville, Iowa tossed a two-hit shutout that included three strikeouts and only two walks.

Up Next: With the sweep, Loras has earned a bid into the A-R-C tournament hosted at Simpson College. The Duhawks will play on Friday, May 9, with their seed and opponent to be determined.
