Duhawks Split Doubleheader Against the University of Dubuque

DUBUQUE, Iowa — The Loras College softball team had a mixed doubleheader performance against the University of Dubuque on Saturday afternoon, splitting its doubleheader at the UD Softball Field.

Game One: Loras 7, University of Dubuque 0

In game one, Loras dominated, limiting the Spartans to just one hit while amassing eight of its own.

The Duhawks took control of the game in the sixth and seventh innings. Katherine Svigelj led off the sixth with a double to right field, followed by an RBI double from Ava Franklin that brought Svigelj home. Dana Skorich then added to the lead with a single through the right side, scoring Franklin to make it 2-0.

The seventh inning saw continued success for the Duhawks as Gillian Jones singled to center field and Bailey Welu followed with a bunt single. Franklin then drove in another run with a single to right field, and Kaili Henning contributed a single up the middle, extending the lead to 4-0.

Henning also shined in the circle, pitching a complete game, allowing only one hit, striking out seven batters, and issuing three walks for her seventh win of the season.

Game Two: Loras 2, University of Dubuque 4

The Spartans jumped ahead early with a solo home run by Kaitlyn Powell in the first inning to give UD the lead.

In the fourth inning, Dubuque extended its lead with two unearned runs, making it 3-0.

Loras responded in the fifth when Ellie Baker singled and later scored on an Ava Franklin single, narrowing the gap to 3-1.

The Duhawks continued to fight back in the sixth inning; Kiya Steger was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored on a groundout by Gillian Jones, bringing the score to 3-2. However, the Spartans added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth with a single by Lauren Jacobs, leading to the final score of 4-2
