DECORAH, Iowa – The Loras College softball team secured a split with the Luther College Norse on Tuesday afternoon in a key American Rivers Conference doubleheader at Betty A. Hoff Field.
Game One; Loras 1, Luther College 0
Game one of a key doubleheader between the Duhawks and Norse was a pitchers duel from the beginning with
Kaili Henning and Alexa Stevermer going out for out. The game remained scoreless through the first five innings thanks to some key pitches by Henning to escape jams in the first two innings.
Ava Franklin delivered the lone run for Loras. She lined a two-out RBI double to left center to score
Katherine Svigelj, who reached on a walk the prior at-bat.
Henning was able to get out of a base-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh to secure her eighth win of the year.
Game Two: Loras 3, Luther College 9
The Duhawk started strong in the first inning with Svigelj walking, followed by Franklin doubling and advancing Svigelj to third.
Kaili Henning flied out to center field for a sacrifice fly, allowing Svigelj to score.
Luther scored three runs in the bottom half of the first inning after a two RBI single from Avery Nehring.
In the third inning, the Duhawks added another run when Henning doubled and later scored on a single by
Kiya Steger. For every Loras run, Luther seemed to have a answer as they responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth.
In the sixth,
Ellie Baker contributed a single to right field, driving in
Laurissa Klapatauskas after
Ashli Bossom's double had set up runners in scoring positions. However, Luther widened its lead by scoring four runs in the bottom of the inning, aided by a series of Duhawk errors.
Up Next: Loras will host the No. 23-ranked team in the country on Saturday as the Central College Dutch travel to Faber-Clark Field for senior day. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. with senior day festivities taking place in between games.
