Loras Heads to Trine for First Ever NCAA Tournament Appearance

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Loras College softball team made history Monday afternoon after being the first team in Loras College history to hear their name called in the NCAA Selection Show.

The Duhawks are headed to Trine University as part of the Angola Regional and will play the No. 24-ranked University of Rochester on Thursday, May 14, at 1:30 p.m. eastern time at SportONE/Parkview Softball Field.

The Duhawks are coming off a 29-14 regular season record, which included an 8-2 Florida trip at THE Spring Games, a senior day sweep over then No. 23-ranked Central College, and a conference semifinal win over No. 23-ranked and top seeded Wartburg College to advance to the programs first American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Championship game. They will end the year with the most wins in head coach Ashley Winter's tenure, which began in 2010.

Sophomore Dana Skorich leads the Duhawks at the plate, batting .393 with 13 doubles, a home run, 13 runs scored and 30 RBIs. She recently also set a new single season record with 59 hits this season. Kiya Steger has ended the season on a tear, finishing the year with a .373 batting average that includes 10 home runs, a new single season record, and 49 RBIs, which will also be a new single season record at the end of the season.

The Duhawks have also gotten key contributions from Ellie Baker, who ranks second on the team in batting average as a freshman, Ava Franklin, who has a .331 batting average, and Katherine Svigelj, who has given Loras a lot of energy from the lead off spot.

Sophomore Kaili Henning has been Loras' ace this season with a 13-6 record and 1.95 ERA over 129.1 innings pitched.

As a team, the Duhawks are batting .320 while in the circle, Loras has a 2.45 ERA over 279.2 innings pitched.

The Duhawks first round opponent, the University of Rochester, comes in with a 35-8 record and earned the Liberty League's automatic bid after an 8-5 win over Ithaca College in the championship game. Ranked No. 24 in the latest NFCA poll, the Yellowjackets are led by Riley Laygo, who is batting .534 with 16 home runs and 69 RBIs. Largo sits in the top 10 in Division III in most hitting categories, leading the country in total bases, ranking second in hits and slugging, third in home runs, runs scored and RBIs.

In the circle, the Yellowjackets pitching staff has compiled a 2.56 ERA led by Molly Broccolo and Maddie White.

The host school, Trine University, earned their way into the tournament by winning the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) conference tournament. The Thunder took down Calvin in the championship game 7-5. Trine enters with a 32-4 overall record and finished MIAA play 14-2. The defending national champions are ranked second in the latest NFCA poll and are batting .392 as a team, led by senior Karley Trine, who is batting .480. The Thunder lead Division III with 58 home runs.

The last team in the region is Earlham, who is also making their first NCAA tournament appearance. The Quakers earned their bid by winning the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship, taking down Transylvania 6-5 in game two of the championship series.

Earlham heads to Angola with a 26-17 overall record. Mack Harvey leads the team with a .459 batting average, while Morgan Cooksey has a team-best 2.29 ERA in 85.2 innings of work.

Trine and Earlham will kick off regional play at 11 a.m. eastern time on Thursday, with Loras and Rochester to follow. The two winners from Thursday will play at 11 a.m. Eastern on Friday, May 15, with an elimination game to follow at 1:30 p.m. eastern. The Regional Final will take place on Saturday, May 16, at 11 a.m. Eastern, with a "If Necessary" game to follow at 1:30 p.m. Eastern.
