DUBUQUE, Iowa – Despite controlling the majority of the attacking chances Saturday afternoon, the Loras College men's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 1-0 to St. Scholastica inside the Rock Bowl.
The Duhawks, like they did all game, ramped up the pressure in the second half.
Ernesto Silva put a shot on frame in the 65th minute, but Afonso Silva made the save. Just 42 seconds later,
Liam Klossner tested the goalkeeper again, only to be denied.
Ernesto Silva added another attempt in the 70th minute as Loras continued to pile up chances.
Then, against the run of play, St. Scholastica capitalized on its first shot of the match. At the 81:31 mark, Lanji Atanga found the back of the net off an assist from Guilherme Marcondes Pereira, giving the Saints a 1-0 advantage with fewer than nine minutes
The Duhawks put one final shot on goal in the 88th minute.
Ernesto Silva unleashed an attempt at 88:58 that struck the crossbar, keeping Loras off the scoreboard and allowing St. Scholastica to hold on for the 1-0 victory.
Ernesto Silva led the Duhawks with four shots, including two on goal, while Heerkens, Keen, Howe and
Gavin Pienkowski each recorded two attempts.
Up Next: Loras travels to Carroll University on Sept. 13. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
