DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) – The annual Sol Butler Classic hosted by the University of Dubuque was the site of the Duhawks' first track meet of their 2015 indoor season. On the women's side, the team scored 78 points, good enough for second place out of the nine women's teams competing. The men scored 45.5 points, putting them in fifth place out of ten competing schools.
There were a handful of individual victories on both the men's and women's side highlighted by sophomore
Elizabeth Brandenburg and junior
Zach Frey. Brandenburg, the Aurora, Illinois product, won the 55m women's hurdles in a time of 8.63 seconds. She added to her win total with a first place finish in the women's pole vault, successfully clearing a height of 3.35m. Frey, the Cascade, Iowa native, was impressive in the 600m race, finishing first with a time of 1:21.67. Frey's time puts him second in Loras history in the 600m race.
The women's team was also victorious in the 4x200 relay finishing in a time of 1:49.61, with the team of junior
Bree Powers, sophomore
Alexis Hanson, and freshmen
Alyssa Simon and
Devin Hasson. The team of Hanson, Powers, senior
Mercedez Kennedy, and freshman
Sarah Schoel also took the crown in the 4x400 relay, finishing in 4:16.49.
Multiple female competitors for Loras posted high marks on Saturday, with a wide range of results.
In the 55m dash, Simon finished in fourth place with a time of 7.63 and Powers finished right behind her in fifth place with a time of 7.71. Schoel and Kennedy finished two-three in the open 400m with times of 1:03.72 and 1:04.86 respectively. Schoel picked up her third top-five finish in her first collegiate track meet finishing third in the women's long jump with a distance of 5.09 meters.
Other top five performers on the day were sophomores
Audrey Hooks finishing fifth in the hurdles in a time of 9.30 seconds and
Amy Gladis finishing fourth in the women's pole vault clearing a height of 3.20 meters. Senior
Morgan Steere also finished third in the women's weight throw with a distance of 12.63m.
The men's lone individual victory came in the 600m, but there were plenty of top five finishes to compliment Frey's performance. Senior
Kyle Ward finished fourth in the 55m dash with a time of 6.55 seconds and fifth in the 200m dash with a time of 23.26. Finishing right behind Frey in the 600m was junior
Stedman Foster with an impressive time of 1:22.47. Freshman Gerand Moody also had a standout day in his first collegiate meet, finishing fourth in the 55m hurdles with a time of 8.08. Junior
Devan Kennedy finished tied for third in the pole vault clearing a height of 4.10m.
Senior
Jordan Burkholder turned in two top-five performances, finishing fourth in the shot-put with a distance of 13.72m and fifth in the weight throw with a distance of 14.76m. Senior
Nathan Maiers finished just ahead of Burkholder in the weight throw, earning fourth place after throwing for 15.2m.
The Duhawks continue their indoor season next Saturday when they travel to Monmouth, Illinois for the Midwest Invite, hosted by Monmouth College.
