Men's and Women's Track & Field Finish Fourth at UD Spartan Invite

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) – In the final tune-up meet for the Loras Track and Field program before the Iowa Conference Indoor Championships next week, the impressive performances continued to roll in. Both the men's and women's teams placed fourth at the Spartan Invitational hosted by the University of Dubuque on Friday night.

Sophomore Elizabeth Brandenburg continued her dominant performance in the 55m hurdles winning yet another meet finishing with a time of 8.37 seconds. On the men's side, junior Zach Frey also continued his impressive year, winning the 800m in a time of 1:56.08, while senior Nathan Meiers won the men's weight throw with a distance of 15.99m.

Top-five finishes from the women included junior Bree Powers and sophomore Alexis Hanson in the 200m dash, finishing in second and fifth place with times of 26.81 and 27.27 seconds respectively.

Freshman Sarah Schoel finished fifth in the 800m with a time of 2:24.36 and added a fourth-place finish in the long jump with a distance of 5.10m. Right behind Schoel was sophomore Amelia Acompanado jumping a distance of 5.02m. Acompanado also finished fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 10.03m. Junior Shay Coleman finished two spots in front of Acompanado in the triple jump with a distance of 10.36m, which was good for third place.

In the women's shot put, senior Morgan Steere placed second, throwing a distance of 12.82m.

The men got top-five finishes from a number of individuals including senior Kyle Ward in the 55m dash. Ward's time of 6.52 seconds put him in third place in the field. Junior Dan Vatch finished with a season's best in the high jump, clearing a height of 1.86m. In the pole vault, junior Devan Kennedy finished fourth, clearing a height of 4.38m.

The relay teams on both the men's and women's sides earned top-five finishes on the day thanks to strong performances. The women's 4x400 team of Powers, Hanson, Schoel, and freshman Emily Ney finished fourth with a time of 4:09.32.

The men's relay teams enjoyed multiple top five finishes, placing first in the 4x200 with a time of 1:32.65 run by Ward, senior Zac Gassman, junior Stedman Foster, and sophomore Brandon Gradoville. The 4x400 team took second with Gassman, Gradoville, Foster, and Frey running 3:22.43. The men's distance medley relay also took second with junior Tyler Schaefer, sophomores Nick Freidman and Brien Nugent, and freshman Jack Reschenberg in a time of 11:13.66.

The Duhawks wrap up their indoor season next week at the Iowa Conference Championships, hosted by Wartburg College. Both the men's and women's teams will look to improve on their third place finishes of a year ago.
