Duhawks Knock Off Norse on Senior Night

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - In front of an electric crowd inside the Athletic and Wellness Center, the Loras women's volleyball team stunned the first-place Luther Norse in a five-set thriller on Tuesday night (25-21, 25-22, 24-26, 17-25, 15-13). Three Duhawks posted double-digit kills on the evening led by freshman Michelle Budden who racked up 15 in five sets at a .222 clip. Defensively, five different Loras players finished the match with over ten digs on their way to out-digging the Norse, 91-83.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
Set One
  • Firing on all cylinders from the get-go, the Duhawks raced out to a 9-1 lead early in the first frame.
  • A resilient Norse side continued to chip away at the large margin, using three consecutive tallies in the latter stages of the set to even the score at 21-all.
  • After a punctual timeout from head coach Jenna Ness, Loras ripped off the final four points of the frame, using a kill from senior Danni Kennedy to dispatch Luther in set one, 25-21.

Set Two
  • The second set featured both teams scoring evenly back-and-forth to start, as the two sides were deadlocked at 12-all.
  • Freshman Kelly Boge checked into the match at this point and the Duhawks found the perfect rotation for a big run, scoring five straight to take control of set two.
  • Loras controlled the lead to the finish line and sophomore Claire Ritchie, who posted 13 kills and 25 assists in the match for her ninth double-double of 2016, recorded the final kill for a 25-22 win.

Set Three
  • Both sides ran off small runs in the third set, but, once again, the frame was eventually evened up with the score, 16-all.
  • After the Norse took a 20-17 lead, the Duhawks rattled off four-straight points due to Luther errors with junior Haley Bergan at the service line.
  • In one of the many exciting junctures in the match, the Norse won several long rallies which helped them to score the final two points of the frame, winning by a 26-24 final.

Set Four
  • Feeling the momentum from a gutsy third set victory, Luther jumped out to a 9-4 lead with six early kills.
  • Loras did its best to find an answer for the Norse offense, but Luther's 17 kills in the fourth set doomed the Duhawks in this frame, 25-17, sending the match to a deciding fifth game.

Set Five
  • The Norse continued to roll in the early stages of the fifth, capitalizing on Loras errors to take a 5-2 lead, prompting a timeout from Ness.
  • The Duhawks shrunk the margin to two at the turn, trailing 8-6.
  • With their backs against the wall down 11-7, Loras responded in a major way, scoring eight of the final ten points, capped by a Budden kill, to claim the dramatic five-set victory.
