Duhawks Fall in Five to Ottawa

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras men's volleyball team was unable to replicate its success from earlier against Wittenberg, falling in five sets to Ottawa. Sophomores Jimmy Combs, Dylan Ross and Alfredo Lopez each finished with 10 kills to pace the offense.

LORAS HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Duhawks hosted Ottawa on Saturday night in non-conference action.
  • The Braves got off to a fast start and took a 7-2 lead after a Loras error.
  • However, the Duhawks chipped away at the deficit, eventually tying the frame at 11-all after a kill from sophomore Kyle Zacok.  
  • Loras took hold of the advantage towards the end of  the set, using a five-point run to take a 21-16 lead.
  • However, Ottawa went on a run of its own and scored nine of the final 14 points in the frame to take the set one victory, 25-23.
  • Set two was marked by back-and-forth play from both sides as the score was deadlocked at 15 following an error from the Braves.
  • At this point, the Duhawks opened up a three-point advantage, taking an 18-15 lead as a result of a number of Ottawa errors.
  • Later in the frame, the Braves battled back to take a 22-21 lead, only to see that erased by a 4-1 Loras run, resulting in a set two victory for the Duhawks, 25-23.
  • With the match tied at 1-all, set three continued in the similar fashion to that of the previous two sets.
  • Ottawa took the first sizeable advantage of the set thanks to a three-point run forced a Loras timeout with the Duhawks trailing 19-13.
  • After the break in the action, Loras rattled off seven of the next eight points to tie the match at 20-all.
  • Both teams continued to trade points until the Duhawks successfully finished off the set when a kill from freshman Greg Kinney followed by a Brave error to end the set at 28-26.
  • Trailing 2-1, Ottawa was quick to erase the Loras momentum, running out to a 16-8 lead in set four.
  • The Duhawks were unable to respond, falling in set four 25-16, tying the match at 2-all.
  • In the fifth set, both sides went point-for-point as a kill from sophomore Jimmy Combs made the score 6-all.
  • Loras gained its first lead of the frame when an error from Ottawa gave them an 8-7 advantage at the changing of sides.
  • From here, the Braves finished off the match with four consecutive points and opened a three-point lead.
  • An Ottawa kill capped the set at 15-10, earning the Braves the victory in five sets.
  • Loras falls to 7-12 overall while Ottawa improves to 6-18 on the season.
  • The Duhawks will play next Friday against MCVL-foe Adrian in the first game of a spring break trip that will see them traveling to Michigan, New York and Pennsylanvia.
