BEHREND, Pa. (Duhawks.com) - After starting out their east coast swing with an unblemished 3-0 record, the Loras men's volleyball team was tripped up by the Penn State-Behrend Lions by a 3-0 score on Tuesday afternoon. On the offensive end, the Duhawks were led by freshman
Ryan Galvan, whom registered a team-high 12 kills and .240 attacking percentage on the match. Sophomore
Jimmy Combs chipped in six kills out of the middle, leading the team with a .364 attack percentage in three sets.
POST GAME NOTES - The Duhawks faced Penn State Behrend in their second consecutive match against a team out of the NEAC.
- Loras found itself in an early hole in the first frame, trailing the Lions 6-3 after a service ace.
- Behrend continued to extend its lead, taking a 13-8 advantage midway through the set.
- The Duhawks were forced to call a timeout as the Lions extended this margin to six, leading 18-12.
- Following the stoppage of play, Loras chipped into the lead thanks to 4-1 run which forced a Lion timeout with the Duhawks down 19-16.
- Behrend found its rhythm once again after the timeout, scoring six of the final eight points to take set one by a final of 25-18.
- Sophomore Shayne Marquez tallied his 400th assist of 2016 on Loras first point of the match, a kill from freshman Ryan Galvan.
- Both sides went back-and-forth to begin set two, as the score was deadlocked at 6-all.
- As the frame progressed, the Lions used a key four-point run to gain a 15-10 advantage, prompting a timeout from head coach Jeremy Thornburg.
- Behrend continued to extend its lead as the Duhawks trailed 23-13, forcing a second Loras timeout.
- The Duhawks fought back in the frame, going on a 3-2 run to finish the set, but were ultimately bested 25-16 by the Lions, who took a 2-0 match lead.
- Sophomore Jimmy Combs recorded four kills in set two, putting away each of his four attempts.
- Set three began in similar fashion to that of set two, as both teams traded points from the jump as the score was tied at 7-all.
- Loras took its first lead of the frame at the 8-7 mark, following a kill from sophomore Dylan Ross.
- Neither side could gain much ground, however, as the frame was once again tied at 12 after a kill from freshman Greg Kinney.
- At this point, Behrend ripped off three straight kills to take a 15-12 advantage.
- A kill from sophomore Kyle Zacok brought the Duhawks within two as they trailed 16-14 midway through the set.
- Another three-point run from the Lions extended their lead to 19-14, prompting Loras' first timeout in set three.
- The timeout did little to slow the momentum as Behrend finished out the match on a 6-3 run.
- Loras falls to 10-13 overall while the Lions improve to 7-14 on the season.
