SCOUTING THE SPARTANS
Univ. of Dubuque enters Tuesday's action with a 10–10 record overall and 3–5 in Iowa Conference play. The Spartans have seen a mixed bag of results in conference action taking a game from Coe, before splitting with Simpson over the weekend. Dubuque ranks in the middle of the pack in the IIAC in a large majority of the statistics this season. The Spartans boast the fifth best offense and the fourth best pitching staff in the conference with a .298 team batting average and 4.67 team ERA. On the offensive side of things, Dubuque hasn't seen much pop in its bats with two home runs to date. Jarad Clevenger leads the team with a .358 batting average as one of four starters that is hitting above .300. Jacob Padilla has seen the most success on the mound, recording a 3.34 ERA.
SCOUTING THE KOHAWKS
Coe currently ranks seventh in the conference in runs scored with 94, despite a solid conference record at 6–4. The Kohawks have seen success in games decided by two or less runs, winning six of them this season. Coe's offense is once again led by Craig Konrardy who's hitting .365 with seven stolen bases to his name. Last season, Konrardy hit .409 with 20 steals. On the mound the Kohawks have been stellar, ranking second in the Iowa Conference in ERA at 4.17. Zach Kammin has been their most efficient starter to the tune of a 2.22 ERA. Opposing batters have hit a lowly .167 against Kammin, who leads the team in strikeouts with 26.
KONAGEL TAKES ADVANTAGE OF MORE PLAYING TIME
Freshman
Austin Konagel's name was in the lineup three times in four games this past weekend against Luther. The Frankort, Ill. native had a great weekend at the plate, going 5–10 and providing solid defense at both second and third base. On the season Konagel finds himself hitting .364 with four RBIs. With this season being his first at the collegiate level, Konagel's success and ability to hit NCAA pitching gives the Duhawks versatility off the bench.
THE JOYS OF EASTERN IOWA WEATHER
The Duhawks faced just about every form of weather Iowa has to offer last weekend in their series against Luther, forcing delays in both Friday's and Sunday's games. Friday's snow delay forced the teams to end their 8-8 game after the conclusion of the eighth inning. Saturday's weather caused no weather related delays, putting the Duhawks in position to finish game one off with a win. Senior
Lucas Jacque beat out an infield single in the bottom of the ninth, scoring junior
Tony Heiser from third for the game-winning run. On Sunday, the teams endured an hour-long rain delay midway through the nine-inning contest. When the clouds parted, Loras' offense came alive, scoring five runs to take the 10–5 win and earn a series split.
HOVEY RECORDS FIRST WIN
Sophomore
Robert Hovey recorded his first win of his collegiate career on Sunday against Luther. Hovey came in to relieve sophomore Pat Moriarty in the top of the sixth inning and carried Loras the rest of the way. After giving up a two-run homer, the Marist graduate bounced back to limit the Norse to one hit over the final three innings.
JOHNSON TAKING ADVANTAGE OF OPPORTUNITIES
Junior
Thomas Johnson has been making the most of the increased amount of playing time he has been getting this season from head coach
Carl Tebon. Last year, Johnson appeared in 18 games, starting one, finishing with 20 at-bats, five hits and two RBIs. The Kaukauna, Wis. native has started in 16 games this season and currently sits at a batting average of .385 with 12 runs scored and six RBIs. In games two and three against Luther this past weekend, Johnson went 6-for-6 at the plate with one double, earning him Friedman Group Player of the Game honors. Johnson finished the weekend by going 8-for-10 and raised his batting average 100 points.
