DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras softball team secured a sweep on Thursday against Edgewood. The Duhawks took both games by mercy rule, topping the Eagles 12-4 in game one and 10-2 in game two. Sophomore
Miranda Chapman led the team offensively with four hits and five RBIs on the day.
LORAS HIGHLIGHTS
- After a great defensive start to the inning against the first two batters, Edgewood managed to load the bases. Sophomore Emma Corkill managed to work herself out of the inning with limited damage as Edgewood plated one run to take an early lead.
- Junior Dani Stromert started the home half of the inning with great energy, doubling to left center on a 1–0 pitch.
- After working the count full, freshman Megan Larson sent her sixth home run of the season down onto West 16th Street to put the Duhawks in front, 2–1.
- The Duhawk defense continued to dominate as Corkill only faced three batters in the second.
- This momentum carried into their offense as the Duhawks tacked on three more runs, scoring senior Julie Kistner, junior Cate Paulsen and Stromert, taking a 5–1 lead.
- This time the Eagles responded as Jordan Anderson homered to lessen the deficit, 5–2. They tacked on two more in the fourth to close the gap, 5–4.
- In the top of the fifth, the Duhawks made a pitching change, bringing in junior Erin Hosch from the bullpen. Hosch made quick work of Edgewood, striking out all three batters she saw.
- Loras exploded for six runs off four hits and two Edgewood errors in the fifth, taking an 11–4 lead. The frame featured three RBI doubles by senior Makaila Haase and sophomores Bria Lenten and Miranda Chapman. The Duhawks tied their season high for doubles in a game with five.
- In the sixth inning, Chapman scored on a wild pitch to end the game by mercy rule, 12–4.
- After a quiet start to game two, Edgewood was the first to score in the top of the third on a double down the left field line by Anderson.
- Larson responded with an RBI double of her own, scoring freshman Nicole Majewski to tie the ball game at 1-all.
- This scoring trend continued through the rest of the inning as the Duhawks scored four runs on four hits. Chapman and freshman Lauren Fritz were responsible for the additional RBIs, giving Loras a 4–1 lead.
- Anderson sent another long ball to left field for the Eagles in the fifth to lessen the deficit, 4–2.
- The Duhawks were revitalized in the sixth inning, exploding for six runs on six hits. Chapman collected her third and fourth RBIs of the game with a single to center.
- Sophomore Regan Wolverton put the bowtie on the sweep with a infield single back to the catcher with the bases loaded, scoring Fritz from third, giving Loras the 12–4 lead and win in game two.
FRIEDMAN GROUP PLAYER OF THE GAME
Megan Larson | The freshman staked her claim in the batter's box in her first at bat, blasting her team-leading seventh home run of the season. Edgewood had seen enough of Larson's power, walking her in her next three at-bats.
Miranda Chapman | The Mount Vernon native drove in a team-high four RBIs on two singles, powering the Duhawks to a sweep of the Eagles.

The Duhawks will travel to Cedar Rapids to face Coe in their final regular season doubleheader of the year. The Kohawks (24-8, 6-6 IIAC) are riding a five-game winning streak after a sweep of Webster on Sunday. Last season, the teams split as the Duhawks took game one 3–1, but fell 5–3 in game two.
