Women's Volleyball Suffers Five-Set Defeat at Coe

DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras women's volleyball team was bested in five sets by Coe in their Iowa Conference opener on Wednesday night in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Sophomore Claire Ritchie and Seniors Therese Schultz and Tara Blake each posted a team-high nine kills in defeat. Juniors Haley Bergan and Morgan Potts anchored the Loras backline, racking up 35 and 27 digs respectively.

MOMENTS THAT MATTERED
SET ONE
  • A kill from senior Therese Schultz gave the Duhawks a sizable early lead, 6–1, and forced a timeout from the Kohawks.
  • A six-point serving run from Coe erased the deficit and put the Kohawks up 10–9 midway through the frame.
  • Trailing 20–18, Loras ran off seven of the final eight points, using three consecutive service aces from senior Jenna Erickson to close out the set, 25–21.
SET TWO
  • Following a kill from sophomore Claire Ritchie and Coe hitting error, the Duhawks forced a timeout in the second frame, leading 9–5.
  • The Kohawks used a six-point run to even the score at 14-all at the halfway point of the the second set.
  • With the score tied, 17–all, Loras continued its late set heroics, using an 8–4 run to take set two by an identical 25–21 score.
SET THREE
  • Coe got out to an early advantage, leading 11–7 to open up the third set. 
  • The Kohawks continued to stretch this margin, prompting a timeout from head coach Jenna Ness with the Duhawks trailing 20–13.
  • The break in action did little to slow the momentum for Coe, rattling off four of the last five points to win, 25–14.
SET FOUR
  • Erickson stepped to the service line to begin the fourth set and Loras took an early 5–0 lead,  forcing a Coe timeout.
  • Chipping away at the Duhawk advantage, the Kohawks gained the upper hand, taking a three- point lead and prompting a timeout with Loras down 16–13.
  • Coe continued to stretch this margin, finishing off set four by a 25–19 final.
SET FIVE
  • The Duhawks took a 7–5 lead in a back-and-forth fifth set, prompting a timeout from the Kohawks.
  • Out of the timeout, Coe scored five unanswered points, forcing a Loras timeout down 10–7.
  • Although the Duhawks fought to the finish, the Kohawks were able to finish off the five-set comeback, taking the final frame, 15–11.

Haley Bergan | Bergan was all over the court for the Duhawks, racking up 35 digs in five sets. She now is 19 digs away from moving into second place all-time at Loras for digs.
