ST. PETER, Minn. (Sept. 29, 2019) – The Loras College men's tennis team concluded the fall portion of the 2019-20 campaign on Saturday at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional Open, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College, carrying positive momentum from strong performances into the conference season come spring.
In singles play,
Eian Coad led the Duhawks with a first round 6-1, 6-2 win against Anton Sopin from the College of St. Scholastica. In the second round, he came back from a first set deficit (2-6) to win the second and third sets 7-5 and 10-3 against Macalester College's Michael Lockhart to advance to the third round on Saturday morning.
In his opening match on Day 2, Coad faced Will Schneider from the University of St. Thomas, but fell 3-6, 0-6 to continue his play in the consolation bracket.
Loras also celebrated wins in the singles back draws from
Joe Schneider,
Sean Gelski, and
Tommy Linkenheld on Day 2.
The Duhawks saw success on Day 2 from doubles pair
Konnor Barth and
Kevin Blomquist as the duo battled back from being down 4-0 in their opening match in the consolation bracket to defeat Grinnell College's team 8-7. Barth and Blomquist advanced to the quarterfinal round with an 8-4 win against the pair from Concordia University-Wisconsin, but fell on the wrong side of an 8-4 decision against the team from Gustavus in the following match.
Loras will have to wait until the new year for its next match and begins American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) play on Sunday, Mar. 29 at Nebraska Wesleyan University.
