Apr. 8, 2021 - The College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) released their All-Conference Team for the 2021 Men's Volleyball season, seeing
Dorian Fiorenza,
Patrick Mahoney,
Joe Horn and
Andres Martinez all receiving the honor. The four Duhawks mark the most All-Conference selections in a single season in Loras College men's volleyball program history and the most allowed by a single team in the CCIW.
Fiorenza, a sophomore outside hitter from Plainfield, Ill., earned first team recognition for the second year in a row, making him the only Duhawk to earn fist team honors twice. Starting in all 13 matches played, Fiorenza led the team in kills with 149 on the year with a 3.92 kills per set average, placing him second in the CCIW leader board in the category. In total points, Fiorenza also led the Duhawks in total points with 170.0 this season, placing him second in the CCIW. In the last CCIW Men's Volleyball Player of the Week poll of the regular season, Fiorenza saw himself named Offensive Player of the Week after helping the Duhawks earn back-to-back three set sweeps over Illinois Wesleyan University and then-ranked No. 10 North Central College. In the last two games of the regular season, Fiorenza posted 23 kills and boasted a solid .343 hitting percentage. On Mar. 24, 2021 Fiorenza had a season-high 18 kills against North Park University in a 3-1 road victory.
Mahoney, a junior middle blocker from Oak Lawn, Ill., garnered his first All-Conference honor of his career with first team recognition. Making a start in all 14 games of the 2021 season, Mahoney led the team with a .426 hitting percentage, tying for first in the CCIW leader board. On Feb. 24, 2021 against Millikin University, the Marist High School grad posted a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage with 12 kills on 12 attempts in a 3-0 sweep over the Big Blue. Mahoney had a career day on Mar. 24, 2021 with a career-high 14 kills against the North Park University Vikings to help the Duhawks to a four set win. This season for Loras, Mahoney led the team defensively with an impressive 45 total blocks on the season, averaging a conference-leading 1.07 blocks per set.
Martinez, a senior middle blocker from Berwyn, Ill., earned second team honors, making him the first Duhawk in program history to receive back-to-back second team recognition. Martinez locked down the defense at the net with Mahoney, recording the second-most blocks on the year with 35 total to average 0.97 blocks per set, placing him third in the conference in the category. Offensively for Loras, Martinez contributed 49 kills with a .268 hitting percentage. The senior notched a season-high six total blocks against Illinois Wesleyan University on Mar. 6, 2021 as the Duhawks trounced the Titans in three sets.
Horn, a sophomore setter from Oak Lawn, Ill., received his first career All-Conference honor joining Martinez on the second team. Horn excelled offensively for the Duhawks with 395 assists on the season, averaging 9.63 assists per set to place him second in the CCIW leader board. At the service line, Horn led the team with 17 service aces, seeing him fourth in the conference with a 0.41 average per set. The St. Rita High School graduate had a career-high 49 assists on Mar. 24, 2021 against North Park University with a career-high four blocks on Mar. 27, 2021 in a three set sweep over the Augustana College Vikings. Defensivley, Horn joined Mahoney and Martinez at the net with 26 total blocks on the year, placing him third on the team.
The Duhawks ended the regular season with a 9-5 overall record, going 8-4 in CCIW play under first year head coach
