CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (Sept. 25, 2022) – The Loras College men's tennis team raked in the hardware at the 2022 American Rivers Conference (A-R-C) Individual Tournament on Friday and Saturday with five players earning medalist honors in B and C-Flight Singles and B-Doubles.
The weather was not cooperative on the opening day and forced play inside with an altered schedule, but the change did not distract the Duhawks as the B-Doubles duo of
Sean Gelski and
Kareem Kassas played their way into the championship match to take on Central College's Nick Scott and Caleb Hamerlink. The Dutch came away with the 8-5 win as the Duhawks took the runner-up honors. The pair defeated the University of Dubuque's Josh Husemann and Ryan Kiddle, 8-1, to start the day and added an 8-1 victory against Dalton Pregon and Brock Bruns of Buena Vista University in the second round. Kassas and Gelski defeated Brock Hanna and Joseph Haag of Wartburg, 8-3, in the quarterfinals and the Knights' Hunter Gerhardt and Jeff Miller, 8-6, to advance to the championship match.
In B-singles, freshman
Gage Becker made his way to the championship match via wins against Simpson College's Ethan Humble (8-4) in the opening round, Nick Scott of Central in the second round (8-4) and Luther College's Nico Martinez Bali in the quarterfinals (8-3). Becker then took down Luther's Aidan Hunter, 8-2, but fell to Luther's Geoffrey Stoughton in the championship match, 8-4, finishing as the silver medalist.
The Duhawks earned the silver and bronze medal in C-Singles with freshman
Lucas Healy taking the runner-up honor and
Henry Condo finishing third. Healy started the day off with an 8-4 win against Alexander Hardin of Dubuque and defeated Sam Koeppl from Coe College in the second round, 8-2. He defeated Carter Corn from Central, 8-4, in the quarterfinals and faced teammate
Jeremiah Allen in the semifinals, winning 8-1. Healy came up against a tough matchup in Wartburg's Kaleb Flenker and fell 8-4 to take second. Condo earned a first-round in against Kellen Jones from Wartburg, 8-3, and went on to defeat Brendon Hale of Central, 8-3, in the second round. He added an 8-7 win against Luther's Peter Heryla in the quarterfinals and moved to the third-place match after a hard-fought matchup against Wartburg's Flenker. Condo played Allen in a Duhawk versus Duhawk bronze medal match and came away with an 8-7 win.
The Duhawks travel to St. Peter, Minn. for the final tournament of the fall season on Thursday, Sept. 29, playing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championship, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College.
