Duhawks Compete in ITA Midwest Regional Championship

SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Loras College men's tennis team competed in the ITA Midwest Regional Championship, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus College this past weekend.

Ren Kurachi of UW-Superior handed Thomas Kampmier a loss in his opening match by scores of 6-2, 6-2. Gage Becker was unable to overcome Stew Morell of the University of Northwestern and fell 6-1, 7-6 in the first round.

Kampmier and Becker started off doubles play with a win over Carroll University's Andrew and Ryan LaBelle by a score of 8-7, before falling in the second round to Myles Krzewinski and Elios Braind from Carthage College.

Kareem Kassas dropped his first-round match to Sam Murillo of UW-Eau Claire by scores of 4-1, 4-0, while teammate Lucas Healy defeated Griffen Jarchow of the University of Northwestern 2-4, 4-2 and won the tiebreaker 10-4 to advance to the next round. Healy faced Luke Doig of Coe College in the next round and came up short 0-4, 1-4.

Sean Gelski earned a first-round bye but was not able to get past St. Olaf College's Jerusalem Thao in the next round, falling 4-2, 4-2. Andrew Day also started the day with a bye in the opening round and went on to sweep Ethan Towne of Edgewood College in the next round 4-0, 4-0. Day kept the momentum going with another decisive win over Michael Johnson of Saint Mary's University by scores of 4-1, 4-0. Day's tournament run came to an end when he encountered Joao Costa from St. Olaf College who took the match with scores of 7-6, 6-4.

Like his teammates, Diego Hernandez Arrazate began his day with a bye but fell in his first matchup of the tournament to David Azcona of St. Olaf. Henry Condo took on Matt Besek of Saint Mary's and earned the win by scores of 4-2, 4-2 in the second round. Condo went on to soundly defeat Sean Martin in the third round 4-1, 4-1, but eventually fell 6-0 and 6-3 to Cathal Mee of St. Olaf.

In doubles play, Gelski and Hernandez Arrazate dropped their opening matchup against UW-La Crosse's Kenny Schmiesing and Luke Rosen by a score of 5-8, while Condo and Day met a similar fate, falling to Luther's Juan Hernandez and Jake Althaus 8-3.

Kassas and Healy swept Josh Peterson and Evan Kostynick of Saint John's University 8-0 in the opening round and continued that success in the second round by narrowly defeating Edgewood's Caden Nelson and Andrew Hoffman 8-7. The duo tallied one more win over Daniel Skrade and Sean Martin by a score of 8-5, before falling 8-2 to the eventual champions Genaro Dimuro and Ramon Wenker of Luther.
