PELLA, Iowa – The Loras College men's tennis team competed in the A-R-C Individual Tournament, hosted by Central College, this past Friday and Saturday.
In singles play,
Gage Becker fell 3-5 and 0-4 in the round of 32 to Luther's Rhys Biro-Moore.
Kareem Kassas came up short falling 0-4 and 0-4 to Bryton Short of Coe College in the opening round, while
Thomas Kampmier defeated Ola Palmertz of Wartburg College 2-4 and 5-3 to advance to the round of 16. Kampmier dropped his match in the sweet sixteen to Luther's Ramon Wenker by scores of 0-4 and 3-5.
Sean Gelski edged out Wartburg's Aidan Hill 5-4 in both games, while
Henry Condo came out on top against Dalton Pregon of Buena Vista winning game one 4-1 and game two 5-4. Gelski defeated Herny Borts of Buena Vista 3-5 and 4-0 to earn him a spot in the quarterfinals. Harry Hawbaker of Coe handed Gelski 4-0 losses in both games to end his tournament run. Condo went on to drop his round of 16 matchup against Wartburg's Kaleb Flenker 0-4 and 3-5.
Gannon Harrington swept Nebraska Wesleyan's Glenn McChristian 4-0, 4-0 to get him to the next round. Harrington fell in the next round to Central's Brady Corn 0-4, 1-4.
Lucas Healy took care of business against Grant Love of Simpson earning the win by scores of 5-3 and 2-4. Healy fell to Sam Rademacher of Nebraska Wesleyan 1-4 and 2-4 in the quarterfinals.
Andrew Day cruised to a round of 16 victory over Kellen Jones of Wartburg by scores of 4-0 and 4-1. Day swept Dubuque's Ryan Linkie 4-0 in both games of the quarterfinals and repeated the same narrative against Nebraska Wesleyan's Daniel Bernhardson in the semifinals to earn him a spot in the championship match. Day won the Group D-Singles title with a 4-2 and 4-0 win over Ryan Webb of Buena Vista.
Jeremiah Allen also earned an opening round victory, taking down Central's Quin Hull 5-3 and 4-1 to advance to the next round. Allen was stopped by Bernhardson of Nebraska Wesleyan in the quarterfinals, falling 2-4 in both contests. Diego Hernandez-Arrazate dropped his opening match to Dubuque's Alexander Hardin 4-5 and 2-4.
Luis Garcia made a nice run in the Group E-Singles bracket taking down Buena Vista's Joe Knieper 5-3, 4-0 and following that up with another victory over Dawson Freese of Dubuque by scores of 4-2 in both games. Garcia handled Hayden Sinclair of Central 4-0, 4-2 in the semifinals, but ultimately fell in the championship to Tyler Blair of Nebraska Wesleyan 0-4, 1-4.
In doubles play, Becker and Kampmier toppled Juan Hernandez-Herra and Nate Withers of Luther by a score of 6-3 in the opening match. Becker and Kampmier were unable to keep the momentum going and fell 3-6 to Luther's Joao Benvenutti and Abhay Chhabra in the quarterfinals. Gelski and Hernandez-Arrazate dropped their first doubles match 4-6 and Allen and Day followed suit with a 5-7 loss of their own. Condo and Harrington came out on top in their opening doubles match, taking down try Hull and Alec Anderson-Conlon by a score of 7-5. The pair went on to fall 6-1 in the round of 16. Kassas and Healy dominated in their first doubles match, taking the match 6-1 over Dubuque's Pedwar Castillo and Alexander Hardin. The pair dropped their quarterfinals match to Central's Alex Slaymaker and Ayden Fletcher 6-3.
Up Next: The Duhawks head to Saint Peter, Minn. to compete in the ITA Regional Championship. The tournament is a three-day event with the first serve taking place on Friday, Sept. 29.
