SAINT PETER, Minn. – The Loras College men's tennis team competed in the ITA Midwest Regional Championships and the Midwest Open Championships this past weekend.
ITA Singles
Diego Mejías and
Gage Becker were the only two Duhawks that competed in the ITA Singles, and they would both fall short in the opening round of play. Mejías was defeated by Coe's Bryton Short by scores of 6-0 and 6-1, while Becker came up short against Cade Davis from Wartburg by scores of 6-4 and 6-2.
ITA Doubles
The duo of MejÍas and Becker defeated Wilder Cooke and Albert Bostoen from Grinnell by a score of 8-5, however they fell in the next round to Quinn Monson and Yash Bahalkar from Gustavus Adolphus by a score of 8-3, ending the run for the Duhawks at the ITA Midwest Regional Championships.
Midwest Open B Singles
Andrew Day and
Lucas Healy were the two Duhawks that had matches in B singles. Day and Healy would both come up short in their respective matches. Gustavus Adolphus' Ali Derbani would defeat Day by scores of 6-2 and 6-1, while University of Wisconsin-Whitewater's Gavin Kelleher would defeat Healy by scores of 6-0 and 6-4.
Midwest Open B Doubles
Day and
Henry Condo dropped their match to the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point by a score of 8-7. Sam Cañas and
Horia Popa were defeated by Michael Li and Maxwell Davis from Macalester by a score of 8-3.
Sean Sonoiki and Healy faced off against Ryan Bilan and James Murphy from Concordia University Wisconsin, but ended up falling short by a score of 8-3.
Midwest Open C Singles
Sonoiki defeated William Faley from Edgewood by scores of 6-0 and 6-1. The win in the opening round would place Sonoiki up against Sam Kettelhut from the University of Northwestern (UNW) where he would win by scores of 6-1 and 6-0. He would then come up short to Ben Temple from UW-Stevens Point by scores of 6-3 7-6(6).
Popa came out firing as he defeated Isaac Thomforde from UNW in a tiebreaker by scores of 4-6, 7-5, and 10-6. He would then go on to take down Joseph Haag from Wartburg by scores of 6-3 and 6-4, as well as Murphy from CUW by scores of 6-2 and 6-3, and Brady Wierzbicki from UW-Stevens Point in a tiebreaker by scores of 2-6, 6-2, and 10-7. He would eventually fall to Juan Diego Carpio from Grinnell 6-1,6-1.
Condo would add to the Duhawks win total as he defeated Ethan Towne from Edgewood by scores of 6-1 and 6-3. He would then move on and secure another victory as he defeated Alex Laho from Concordia College-Moorhead by scores of 6-1 and 6-0. Condo would then fall to Kaan MacDonald from Grinnell by scores of 6-0 and 6-1.
Cañas defeated Ben Schneider from the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse by scores of 7-6(3) and 6-4. He ultimately fell short to Luca Hettstedt from UW-Stevens Point by scores of 6-4 and 6-1.
Consolation Singles
In draw one of consolation singles Condo had a match against Juan Gallego from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire where he would come up short by a score of 8-3.
In draw two of consolation singles, Cañas would take on Laho from Concordia-Moorhead and defeated him by a score of 8-2. This would put Cañas in a match with Watson Sheard from Bethel, but this would be the end of his run as he fell to Sheard by a score of 8-2. Day would compete against Connor Kyrscio from UW-Stevens Point and fall short by a score 8-2.
In draw three of consolation singles, Healy defeated Kenny Schmeising from UW-Lacrosse by a score of 8-5 and this would place Healy in a match with Gideon Heins from Bethany Lutheran College, where he would be defeated by a score of 8-3. Rounding out the play for the Duhawks would be Sonoiki as he would take on Ryan Reid from Bethel, where he would come up short by a score of 8-1.
The ITA Midwest Regional Championships and the Midwest Open Championships wrap up the fall season for the Purple and Gold.
