Carney and Sonoiki Claim A-R-C Individual Tournament Titles

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Loras College men's tennis team competed in the American Rivers Conference Individual Tournament this past weekend.

In flight A singles, Gage Becker came up short in a tiebreaker to Eli Young from Luther College by scores of 4-0, 1-4 (7-10). Diego MeÍas also fell to Ricky Portilla from Luther by scores of 0-4  and 1-4.

Horia Popa had a bye in flight C singles but would fall short in a match against Aidan Hull from Wartburg College by scores of 5-3 and 4-2. Sam Cañas Guerro lost in a tiebreaker match against Gavin Jablonski of Central College by scores of 4-2 and 3-5 (8-10).

Andrew Day won his round of 32 match up with Wartburg's Ashley Stapley with scores of 4-1 and 4-2, but would fall to Nathaniel Miller from Coe College by scores of 4-5 (8-10) and 2-4.

Sean Sonoiki was victorious as he defeated Kohen Juelfs from Coe College with scores of 4-2 and 4-1 in the round of 32. He would then face off against Alec Anderson-Conlon from Central and would defeat him in the round of 16 by scores of 4-1, 2-4, and 10-7 in a tiebreaker. In the quarterfinals, Sonoiki would take down Pedwar Castillo, from the University of Dubuque with scores of 4-2 and 4-1. The winning continued for Sonoiki as he would go on to win his semi-final match up against Ryuki Matsumoto in a tie breaker with scores of 0-4, 4-0 (10-1) and would end his play at the tournament with a second place finish after coming up short to Gavin Jablonski in the finals. 

Henry Condo defeated Wartburg's Joseph Haag in the round of 32 by scores of 4-2 and 5-4 (7-4). He would also record another win in the round of 16 as he defeated Ian Armbrust from Nebraska Wesleyan University by scores of 4-2 and 4-1. Condo would ultimately fall to Ryuki Matsumoto from Wartburg in the quarterfinals by scores of 2-4, 5-3 (8-10) tiebreaker.

Nick Carney, in round flight D singles, had a bye in the round of 32. His first match was in the round of 16 where he earned a victory over Central's Donovan Klish with scores of 5-4 (7-5) and 4-1. The win would put Carney in the quarter finals where he took down Central's Hayden Sinclair by scores of 5-4 (7-4) and 5-4 (7-2). He continued his win streak to the semi-finals and defeated Milan Lecic from Wartburg by a tie breaker score of 5-4 (7-3) and 2-4 (10-4), but would come up short in the finals earning a second place finish. 

Jackson Craig came up short in the round of 32 to Central's Trey Hull by scores of 3-5 and 2-4.

Jack Seda recorded a win in the round of 32 against Dubuque's Alexander Hardin by scores of 4-2 and 5-4 (9-7). In the round of 16, Seda would come up short against Nebraska Wesleyan's Alvaro Pascual by scores of 4-2 and 4-1.

Diego Hernandez Arrazate opened the round of 32 with a win over Buena Vista University's Ryan Webb with scores of 4-2, 0-4 (10-6). He would then face Keegan Weber from Wartburg in the round of 16 where he would fall short 5-3 and 4-0.

In doubles play, Craig and Carney had a bye in the round of 32 and took down Wartburg's Milan Lecic and Colton Abels by a score of 6-4 in the second round. Day and Condo won in the first round against Brock Bruns and Ryan Webb from Buena Vista by a score of 6-1. That would be the end of the doubles run for Day and Condo as they would fall to Gennaro Dimuro and Jake Althaus from Luther by a score of 6-4.

Hernandez Arrazate and Seda were victorious in doubles play as they defeated Cashen Thompson and Gavin Jablonski from Central by a score of 7-6 (7-5). The duo would then come up short to Dubuque's Alexander Hardin and James Martinez by a score of 7-6 (9-7).
