Women's Tennis Takes Two Commanding Road Wins

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – On Saturday, the Loras College women's tennis team bounced back with two dominant road victories against the Cornell College Rams and the University of Northwestern-St. Paul Eagles.

"The team got their hard hats out and went to work," said head coach Cam Long, summarizing the team's no-nonsense approach to the day's doubleheader.

In doubles play, the Duhawks quickly snagged the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. At No. 3 doubles, Caroline Hutchinson and Alexis Tatum defeated Audrey Small and Isabella Wallin 6-2. Leia Papanicholas and Ellie Kaline handily beat the Rams' Alyssa Flynn and Jenna Benkufsky 6-1. The Purple and Gold confidently walked into singles action up 1-0.
 
The Rams tied up the duel at the No. 2 singles spot, with Dorothy Deans falling to Macallister Graves 4-6, 0-6. However, the Duhawks decisively put this duel in the win column by rattling off wins for the next four matches. At No. 3 singles, Papanicholas outmatched Small 6-3, 6-4. At No. 1 singles, Mary Breitbach conquered Tansy Graves in a tight contest 6-3, 7-5. Kalina outplayed Wallin at the No. 5 spot winning 6-2, 6-1. At No. 4 singles, Hutchinson bested Flynn 6-1, 6-4. Finally, at No. 6 singles, Tatum fell in a close battle to Benkufsky 6-3, 3-6, 0-1(6).

The Purple and Gold rode their morning win into confident doubles play in the afternoon. Deans and Breitbach got the doubles sweep started at the No. 1 spot defeating Abby Johnson and Abby Ross 6-2. Kalina and Papanicholas kept the momentum going, taking down Paige Johnson and Elise Jarchow at No. 2 doubles 6-4. Completing the doubles sweep Hutchinson and Lauren Keiper outlasted Caitlyn Swigart and Isabelle Sullivan 7-5. The ladies headed into singles up against the Eagles 1-0.
 
Deans started off the superior team singles performance at the No. 2 spot, prevailing over P. Johnson 6-1, 6-2. Papanicholas followed suit at the No. 3 spot cruising past Jarchow 6-0, 6-1. At No. 5 singles Kalina conquered Swigart 6-2, 6-0. Tatum edged out Sullivan at No. 6 singles winning 6-0, 7-5. At No. 1 singles, Breitbach triumphed over A. Johnson 6-2, 6-4. Hutchinson completed the sweep against the Eagles, beating Ross in a nail-biter 6-2, 6-7(3), 1-0(7).
