DUBUQUE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) – The Loras College Men's Tennis team suffered a heartbreaker on Saturday, losing a nailbiter to Buena Vista, 5-4. The Duhawks took two of the three matches in the doubles portion, but the Beavers responded in singles play, taking four of the six matches to take the dual victory.
At No. 1 doubles, senior
Brian Falvey and freshman
Zach Atzen won the match by af 8-6. The pair never trailed during the match, but at one point were only up 7-6 before winning their eighth game for the victory. Junior
Ulises Hernandez and freshman
Justin VanWambeke followed up at No. 2 doubles with a win of their own. The score of their match was also 8-6, but Hernandez and VanWambeke won in come back fashion rattling off three straight game wins after being down 6-5.
The Duhawks dropped their only doubles portion loss at No. 3 doubles, which featured sophomore
Jason Derby and senior
Jack O'Brien. The duo went down early 3-0, but fought valiantly in their comeback attempt, eventually falling 8-5.
The singles division of the match was the Duhawks Achilles heel, as Loras was only able to claim two wins. Loras' two wins came from Hernandez at No. 3 singles and Derby at No. 6 singles. Hernandez won his match in dominant fashion, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-0. Derby never trailed in his match, winning in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.
The Duhawks narrowly missed out on their first team win at No. 1 singles with Falvey falling to Chris Halbermann of Buena Vista. The Lockport, Illinois native fought tooth and nail, but went down in straight sets. Falvey trailed by a narrow margin in set one 5-4 before dropping his first set, 6-4. He responded with a battle in the second set, but fell 7-5, taking Halbermann to an extended set.
The Duhawks are back in action on Wednesday when they host Luther. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
