Men's Tennis Staves Off Buena Vista for First IIAC Win

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) – The Loras men's tennis team opened the Iowa Conference portion of its season in a big way, defeating Buena Vista on Wednesday evening, 5–4. With the win, the Duhawks (6–4, 1–0 IIAC) pick up their first conference win under head coach Chad Fenwick and first since the 2013 season.
 
LORAS HIGHLIGHTS
  • The freshmen pair of Sean Baldwin and Riley Michel dropped their match at No. 1 Doubles by a score of 8-0, but were picked up by their teammates at No. 2 and 3 doubles.
  • At No. 2 doubles, junior Jason Derby and sophomore Kevin Murphy cruised to an 8-3 win to get Loras on the board.
  • Seniors Ulises Hernandez and Neil Kane got off to a slow start at No. 3 Doubles, dropping five of the first seven games in the match and found themselves down 5-2. The veterans kept battling and went on a 6-1 run, winning the match by a final score of 8-6 and earn Loras a crucial second victory entering singles play.
  • Wednesday's singles matches were split down the middle with Buena Vista getting wins at No.'s 1-3 singles and Loras taking the No. 4-6 spots.
  • No. 4 singles for the Duhawks featured freshman Riley Michel. The Huntley, Ill. native won the first set in exciting fashion pulling off the 7-5 win before falling in set two 6-4. In set three, Michel took command and rode to a 6-3 win. This win moves Michel to 4-4 in singles competition this season.
  • Murphy represented the Duhawks at the No. 5 singles position and won in dominating fashion in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. This win moves Murphy's singles record to 5-2.
  • Kane took after Murphy by also winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-3 improving his singles record to 4-4. This win clinched the match for Loras giving them the 5-4 win.

UP NEXT
Loras will continue its road swing on Saturday against Marian in search of its fourth consecutive win, which would set a program record. First serve is scheduled for 12 p.m.
