FOND DU LAC, Wis. (Duhawks.com) - The Loras men's tennis team continued its resurging season on Saturday, defeating Marian on the road, 8-1. Loras swept all six singles matches for the second time season, improving to 7-4.
LORAS HIGHLIGHTS
- In doubles play at No. 1, senior Ulises Hernandez and junior Jason Derby picked up the 8-1 win for their first combined doubles win of the year. Derby improved to 6-2 in doubles while Hernandez picked up his fifth win in doubles play.
- The Duhawks added a second win in doubles play at No. 2 with the freshman duo of Sean Baldwin and Riley Michel. Saturday marked the third win this season for Baldwin and Michel as doubles partners.
- Marian scored its lone win of the match at No. 3 doubles, defeating senior Neil Kane and freshman Joe Janouch, 8-6.
- Derby opened singles play with a convincing win in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, over Marian's Joey Dittman at the No. 1 spot. Derby evened his singles record at 4-4 with the win.
- Hernandez added his second win of the day at No. 2 singles, with a 6-2, 6-2 win in straight sets.
- Baldwin needed a third set to earn the win, prevailing over Danny Roe of Marian, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Baldwin's singles record this season now stands at 3-6 in his freshman campaign.
- At the No. 4 spot, Michel took the first set 7-6 and won the tiebreaker, 8-6, before sealing the victory with a 6-2 win in set two for his fifth win of the season.
- Kane moved up from the No. 6 spot and showed no signs of struggle at No. 5, winning 6-2, 6-1. Kane is one of three members of the Loras roster with a 5-4 record in singles play this season.
- Making his first appearance this spring season, Janouch bounced back from his doubles loss to win at the No. 6 spot over Marian's Zachary Stanczyk, 6-0, 6-4.
- With their seventh win of the season, Loras matches its highest win total since the 2004-05 season.
UP NEXT
Loras goes for its second conference win on Wednesday at its home opener against the University of Dubuque. The Spartans are 2-13 this season and winless in the Iowa Conference after dropping a pair of matches to Wartburg and Luther on Saturday.
