DAVENPORT, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - The Loras men's tennis team showed little signs of rust in its season opener on Thursday, handing St. Ambrose an 8-1 loss. Under the direction of head coach Chad Fenwick, Thursday marked the first season-opening win for the men's program since the 2009 season.

LORAS HIGHLIGHTS
  • The Duhawks took a commanding lead right from the start, winning all three doubles matches. In his men's tennis debut, sophomores Eric Zirzow and Tom Auge at No. 3 doubles, earning the 8-5 win.
  • St. Ambrose earned its lone win of the day at No. 1 singles, as Bert Van Rooijen had just enough to edge senior Jason Derby. Both sets were decided in a tiebreaker, with van Rooijen winning 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (7-3).
  • At No. 2 singles, junior Kevin Murphy picked up right where he left off in the spring, winning in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0. Sophomore Sean Baldwin and Auge added identical wins at No. 3 and No. 6 singles.
  • Zirzow opened with a 6-2 win in set one, but a comeback effort from Colon Stiefer pushed the match to tiebreaker as Stiefer took set two, 6-2. Zirzow rallied in set three and earned his first career singles win, taking the tiebreaker, 10-5.
