Duhawks Finish Second/Third at IIAC Outdoor Championships

STORM LAKE, Iowa (Duhawks.com) - With a monstrous showing on the final day of the 2017 Iowa Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Loras climbed the team standings to finish second on the women's side and third on the men's side. In total, the Duhawks crowned nine individual champions and collected a pair of relay championships in the men's 4x400 and 4x800.

CHAMPIONSHIP PERFORMANCES
  • Sophomore Audrey Miller completed the double at the outdoor championships, winning the women's 5,000 meter, defeating Wartburg's Ashlyn Bagge. For nearly the entire race, Miller and Bagge were neck-and-neck, but on the final split, Miller ran 1:16.169 to Bagge's 1:18.086.
  • After qualifying with the third best time in the 400 meter hurdles, sophomore Bella Solis ran a blistering pace of 1:01.81 to re-break her own school record and secure 10 points for the Duhawks in the team standings.
  • Loras collected 26.5 team points in the women's pole vault, led by senior Elizabeth Brandenburg and her eighth IIAC Pole Vault Championship at 3.88m. Freshman Alexis Alt cleared 3.17m while sophomore Taylor Dooley turned in a personal best height of 2.87m. In her final competition, senior Amy Gladis collected a fifth place finish with her height of 2.72m.
  • The Duhawks found similar success in the men's competition, collected 20.5 points with a first, second and sixth place finish. Senior Devan Kennedy repeated from the indoor season as conference champion with his height of 4.30m and was followed by junior Hunter Dunlap at 4.15m and senior David Rodgers IV at 3.85m.
  • Freshman Elyse Acompanado made her case for the IIAC Field MVP, winning the women's long jump and triple jump at 5.67m and 11.49m, respectively.
  • Freshman Patrick Mikel continued to shine on the track Saturday, winning the men's 400 with a time of 47.73, moving him into second all-time in program history. 
  • Junior Kylian Lally continued his dominating outdoor season in the men's 800, winning his sixth race and third consecutive with a time of 1:52.90, setting a stadium record in the process.
  • In the final race of the weekend, the Duhawks saved the best for last. Heading into the anchor leg with five teams within a second of each other, Mikel came out of the mix and ran a 47.75 leg to pull away from the field and win by nearly one second, finishing with a time of 3:15.92.

UP NEXT
With the 2017 NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships less than two weeks away, Loras turns its attention to next week's Last Chance Meet as five athletes and two relay teams are within striking distance for a bid to nationals. The top 22 women and top 20 men in each individual event will qualify along with the top 16 relay teams from each gender earning a place at the national championships.
