Women's Tennis Goes 1-1 After Day One of Spring Break Matches

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Loras College women's tennis team split a pair of matches against King's College and Wheaton College in the opening day of the spring break trip.

The Duhawks wasted no time with doubles as all three doubles pairs took down their opponent 6-0. At No. 1 doubles Mary Breitbach and Dorothy Deans took down Ashley Kenia and Carlee Dellose. The No. 2 and No. 3 doubles followed suit as Leia Papanicholas and Ellie Kalina defeated Hailey D'Amato and Sarah Stettler while Alexis Tatum and Lauren Keiper silenced Betsy Allen and Morgan Eiswerth. The Duhawks confidently went into singles with a 2-0 lead.

In singles play it was all Purple and Gold as Breitbach defeated Kenia at the No.1 singles 6-2, 6-0 while Leia Papanicholas secured the No. 2 singles win over Dellose by scores of 6-2, and 6-4. Hutchinson bested D'Amato in the No.3 singles by 6-3 and 6-1 and Kalina took down Stettler 6-1 and 6-2. Tatum and Keiper took down their opponents 6-2 and 6-1 respectively at the No. 5 and No.6 singles to solidify a Duhawk victory.
 
Loras 1, Wheaton 6
In doubles play, Papanicholas and Kaline earned the sole doubles win for the Duhawks as they defeated Wheaton's Laila Haraj-Sai and Asia Hollis by a score of 6-3. Breitbach and Deans fell short in the No. 1 spot to Alissa Ortiz and Kara Greenlee 2-6 and Hutchinson and Tatum had a similar fate going down 6-7 (6-8) and headed into singles down 0-1.

Papanicholas secured the only point for the Purple and Gold as the score was tied 3-3 and Ortiz was unable to continue, which resulted in a win for Papanicholas. Breitbach fell at the No. 1 singles to Greenlee 3-6, 6-7 (7-9) and Deans came up short in the No. 2 singles to Haraj-Sai 3-6 and 2-6. At the No. 4 spot Hutchinson was defeated by Hollis 4-6 and 2-6 and Kalina fell short to Taylor Wilson at the No. 5 spot 5-7 and 1-6. Finishing the day, Tatum went down 4-6 and 1-6 to Maya Brennan.
