Ana Cayro-Kapparos

  • Ana Cayro-Kapparos is a hometown success story. After an outstanding basketball, track and cross country career at Dubuque Senior, she joined the fledgling Duhawk program and using her attitude, scoring prowess and skills as a floor general rewrote the record books in four years.
  • During her years, the Loras program began its climb to prominence in the Iowa Conference. Cayro-Kapparos' career yielded her a mantle of honors: first Loras woman to be a two-time All-Iowa Conference selection (1992 and 1993), NCBT All-American selection (1993), first woman to score more than 1,000 points through her junior year. When she graduated, she held eight individual records and was the No. 1 all-time scorer and rebounder.
  • Co-captain as a junior and senior, Cayro-Kapparos missed only three games in four years. She was the team's leading scorer as a freshman with 10.9 point a game, and got only better, averaging 20.8 as a sophomore (placing her among the NCAA Division III leaders most of the season), 18.4 as a junior and 16.7 as senior, including 24 points in her final game. In her final three seasons, the Duhawks broke 60 individual and team records and won 37 games.
  • Coach Lynn Baber recalls Cayro-Kapparos as a player "who always gave her most to the game," adding, "She was very much a team player. She was not a vocal leader, she led by example." Cayro-Kapparos still holds or shares four school records - field goals in a game (15), field goals in a career (640), free throws made and attempted in a career (321 of 419) and season free throw percentage (81.2 per cent in 1991-92).
  • A general science/pre-physical therapy major, Cayro-Kapparos was active in intramurals, the Loras Players' production of "Grease," the Rohlman Hall Council and the Physical Therapy Club. A physical therapist today, she remains a sharing person as a school volunteer, T-ball coach and a team captain for the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. With her husband Kevin, and sons Zachary and Garret, the Kapparos' live in Williamsburg, Iowa.
