  • In 1980, Bob Bierie returned home to Dubuque after coaching stints at three high schools as well as Northern Illinois University and took over as the 19th head coach in Loras' hallowed history. In his first seven years on campus, Loras had break-even or winning seasons, and in 1985 finished 8-2-1. In his remarkable 25-year coaching career, the numbers speak volumes: most career victories (144), 20 career shutouts, 13 straight Rock Bowl victories (1991-93), a 22-3 mark, including the last 20 in a row against intra-city rival University of Dubuque, 4-1 against traditional rival St. Ambrose, five unbeaten home seasons and two eight-victory seasons.
  • Bierie was athletic director from 1985-97 and led the Duhawks back into the Iowa Conference and NCAA Division III in 1986. And he was a devoted teaching coach: more than 80 ex-Loras players from the Bierie era are coaches or administrators on the college or prep level.. Above all he was a beloved coach, confidant, inspiration and friend to his hundreds of players. As a testament to their love, devotion and respect, the football alumni raised $500,000 to etch Bierie's name on the Rock Bowl field and has nearly brought in an additional $500,000 to preserve his unique legacy
